2023 Pinot Noir OLD VINES
from the Recher Herrenberg
Location:
The name Herrenberg refers to the Lords of Saffenburg, to whom the village of Rech belonged and who owned their vineyards in this prime location.
With its slate weathered soil with greywacke, the centrally south-facing steep slope, with an inclination of up to 60%, offers excellent conditions for optimal use of solar energy. Here, ideal conditions are found for the production of elegant, sometimes powerfully broad Pinot Noir wines, with high aging potential.
Vinification:
The hand-picked and selected Pinot Noir grapes were fermented for 19 days in the mash tank. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrique barrels. The Pinot Noir "Alte Reben" was aged and stored for 17 months in 100% new barrique barrels.
Unfiltered, we recommend decanting.
Recommendation:
Actually, the "Alte Reben" don't need a companion, but a selection of French raw milk cheeses is very suitable.
Special Feature:
We are fortunate that our vineyards in Recher Herrenberg still have ungrafted Pinot Noir vines that were planted before 1940 and in the early 1950s. These self-propagated plants are naturally unselected, the fruit is small-berried and also very susceptible to coulure during flowering. Yields usually do not exceed 20 hl./ha. Here, our most subtle and delicate Pinot Noirs grow every year. We have been propagating this high-quality genetic material for several years. The first vineyards, such as the Ahrweiler Rosenthal, are already bearing fruit.
